Today is an important day to remember and continue the rights struggle that women around the world have been fighting for centuries.How Did March 8 Come About?The origin of March 8 dates back to the harsh working conditions faced by female workers during the rapid industrialization of the late 19th century.The strike initiated by female textile workers in New York in 1857 for better wages and humane working conditions went down in history in a bitter way. Over the years, this struggle has transformed into international solidarity.In 1910, socialist and women's rights advocate Clara Zetkin proposed that March 8 be commemorated as “International Women's Day”; this proposal was gradually accepted worldwide. The United Nations officially recognized March 8 in 1977.Working Women and Equality of Rights TodayToday, although women are more visible in education, working life, and politics compared to the past, issues such as equal pay for equal work, the glass ceiling, the invisibility of care work, and violence still persist.Working women bear a double burden both in the workplace and in domestic responsibilities; this situation shows that equality of rights is not only a legal but also a social issue.The Situation of Women in SwitzerlandSwitzerland stands out with its strong social policies on women's rights, but these rights were gained quite late. Swiss women only obtained the right to vote and be elected at the federal level in 1971.Today, wage inequality and the scarcity of women in senior management positions are still debated issues. Nevertheless, women's strikes and civil society movements continue to raise social awareness.The Situation of Women in TurkeyIn Turkey, women gained the right to vote and be elected before many European countries in the early years of the Republic. However, today, the low employment rate of women, informal work, wage inequality, and violence against women continue to exist as serious problems.Despite this, working women, unions, women's organizations, and individual struggles continue to defend their rights.March 8 is not only for women but for everyone who wants a more just, equal, and humane world. The struggle of working women is a common story of solidarity that transcends borders.
